Magical Tree Cottage Incense Smoker

This cottage is hand built from stoneware clay. Once I make the cottage shape in various pieces I set them aside. While they are firming up a bit so it is able to be handled I work on creating the mushrooms, chimney and all the details that make this gnome/fairy house magical.  Once it has firmed up I attach it's magical fungi and the house details  Then I set it aside to dry slowly. Once dry it is off to the kiln for it's first round of firing. 

Once bisqued I hand paint it's design. Then I glaze over the the design. Each ceramic piece takes multiple layers of glaze which I hand paint on each piece so that I have control over coverage and placement. 

Then into the kiln for it's next firing. I wipe it down and give it a thorough inspection. This is when I make the hole in the back that will allow air to be pulled into the piece to feed the incense so it can burn. Now she is ready for her new home.  

The bisque dish disc is helpful to slide the incense cone into the cottage. The string allows for easy removal. Please never leave this unattended. Always keep a close eye when incense is burning in the cottage. Discoloration on the incense disc and inside the cottage will happen. The bottom can get warm so please place on a heat proof surface. 

Mushrooms symbolize good luck, longevity, energy, transformation, and enlightenment.
